How to Cut Pet Expenses

IStock_000004978951XSmall
Is it only me, but I think prices at the grococery store have skyrocketed.  I can never leave the store without having spent about $80.  Prices for pet food has also gone off the roof, not to mention seeing the vet or treating the poor animal for a little flea problem.  It is crazy!  Here 3 tips provided by Consumer Reports on how to cut pet expenses.

Avoid premium food. Since “premium” has no legal definition, look instead for phrases like “complete and balanced” or “total nutrition.” If a product is so labeled, it’s met an industry standard and will meet the needs of “the vast majority of healthy pets.”

Check your vet’s pricing. Most veterinarians set all their fees as a percentage or multiple of their standard physical-exam charge, so call around—“the best time to comparison shop is when your pet needs a routine checkup, not when you’re stressed out by a sick or injured animal.” Also, if your pet needs medication, check if your local drugstore carries it. Vets usually charge premium prices for pet meds.

Fight fleas for less. An expired patent means that the active ingredient in Frontline Plus flea and tick collars—fipronil—is now available from more-affordable brands.

How to Make a Perfect Cup of Tea

IStock_000007037799XSmall

Just a coffee connaiseurs like fresh, just ground coffee beans to prepare themselves a nice cup of coffee, here are some good tips to prepare a good cup of tea!

Use whole leaves. “Whole leaves retain their essential oils and flavors better than torn ones.” Give the leaves “a gentle rinse” with cold spring water. That not only removes residue but “primes them for maximum release of flavor and aroma.”

Mind the temperature. Heat kettle water to a boil, but don’t overboil: That will deoxygenate the water, “resulting in a flat-tasting final cup.” While your tea is steeping, keeping the water at a consistent temperature is “crucial,” so a double-walled teapot is recommended. The temperature should be just below boiling for black teas, but cooler for green teas.

Know your steeping time. Since optimal steeping times “vary widely”—from one to eight minutes—ask the salespeople at your tea shop for guidance on the leaves you pick out.

The Muppets Premieres Today! - Review

Walter and Kermit
This past Monday, I had the pleasure to go see with my 3 children the screening of The Muppets before it premieres today for the general public. It was a generous invitation of Allied-THA.

I grew up watching The Muppets, and it was just an incredible moment for me to see them again on the screen.  It was like walking into a time tunnel and reviving memorable moments of my childhood.

At the beginning of the movie, I wasn't quite sure how the theme was going to develop, and my 3-year old was getting a bit anxious to see all the main characters of The Muppets, which I thought took some time to show up.  My older boys, on the other hand, were quite pleased with the pace of the movie.

The silhouette of Kermit when he does his spectacular entrance was for me the beginning of the movie - just brilliant!!

Photo 3
The producers of the movie did a magnificent work bringing back The Muppets, and showing us what had happened to each one of the characters in [their] "real life" after the show ceased to air on TV.

I really enjoyed how everything started to take shape and have that singular and signature scenes that only The Muppets could have.  Of course, another favorite part of mine was the appearance of Miss Piggy, despite time, she had not changed a bit - glamourous, conceited but with a huge and warm heart, and of course, unconditional love for Kermit.

Miss Piggy
It was a movie about feelings.  There were significant sentiments coming from everyone in this movie, from the producers who threw a lot of love to the making of the movie, creativity and appreciation from top fashion designers making couture outfits for Miss Piggy and Kermit for their world premier, MAC Cosmetics coming out with a Miss Piggy limited edition collection, to older spectators feeling lots of nostalgia and having flashbacks of their childhood, to the media building much anticipation before its opening day. The comeback was just what we wanted and how we wanted it.

Absolutely, one of my favorite moments was also Miss Piggy and Kermit's Rainbow Connection duet. Of course, I just could not missed saying that Kermit's facial expressions are just the best and always so precise to transmit what he is feeling.  The finale is marvelous as Walter does his talent show to finish raising the money to salvage the Muppet theater.

Photo 2-1
I definitely recommend this movie for the whole family.  As I said, it may not be quite exciting for a tod at the beginning, but as the characters start showing and taking up their roles, and then they are all together again, every member of the family will definitely have a good time, especially those who grew up watching the unforgettable Muppets!

A Change Agent in the School Education of My Child

Shutterstock_32276014
Often times, first time moms fear that they will not know what to do with their first child.  That fear factor goes away quickly. Nature is so wise that when you give birth, you do not only get a beautiful baby, but with it, you also get your sixth sense, your mother instinct.  This mother instinct is powerful.

As a first time mom, you tend to believe in most of what people tell you because you know that what they are telling you is based on experience.  You are all ears listening to tips and trying to figure out what works best in your life and in that of your family.

When first child became a toddler and was supposed to be already talking, and he wouldn't, I was a bit concerned. The pediatrician would tell me to give him some time, friends would tell me "oh, that is ok., boys tend to speak later," others would tell me that because he listens to two languages, he was taking his time to figure them out, and so forth.  They all seemed valid reasons.  So, I kind of went with what they all told me even though something bothered.

My son was a happy child all the time, they used to call him the "clapping baby".  He would clap and get excited about everything.  But, when he started going to preschool, he started to encapsulate himself gradually.  Teachers would tell me that I needed to speak to him in English because that was the reason he was not talking.  Furthermore, the pediatrician told me that bilingual kids tend to speak later because they are sorting out the languages.  However, they did give me some info to take my child to the government program No Child Left Behind for an initial evaluation.  My child did not qualify for No Child Left Behind due to his "bilingualism." ;(

Again, I kind of believed it and kind of not. Deep inside me, I knew there was something wrong, something else.  My son had always been the soul of playdates, parties, family reunions, etc. It was not normal that he would now withdraw.  So, on my own initiative, I decided to put my son on private Speech Therapy.  The wait list was 6 months. I waited.  He went on to preschool, a different one, he did better.  After 3 years of speech therapy, although, there was progress, and the therapist would tell me all these reasons why his progress was slow, which I did not buy it.  I thought there had to be something else than just a regular speech delay. I pulled him out of speech therapy. I thought it was enough and my son should have been already talking better.

I took him to the Children's Hospital and made appointment with the best pediatric neurologist.  Again, the wait was 5 months.  I did not care, since this was not a life/death situation.  I waited.  I got the appointment. My son was diagnosed with a auditory processing disorder.  Wow! Tears came down my eyes.  I did not know what all that meant for his life and our family.

When I presented the diagnosis to the pediatrician, he was impressed that I was doing all of these things on my own, and he said I needed to get an Individualized Education Program in school.  By this time, my son was already in the middle of first grade.  I just could not believe that his kindergarten teacher or his first grade teacher did not see anything weird about my son.  I applied for an Individualized Education Program for my son per my pediatrician's recommendation.  The school did not grant it based on the premise he was having issues with English due to his bilingualism. I told them that my son was diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder, but tehy would not take it because my son had not been comprenhensively evaluated. It was just a clinical evaluation.

So, I decided to have my son evaluated from head to toe from a psycholigical and neurological perspective.  The insurance would not cover the psychoeducational evaluation and many other one.  My husband and I did not care.  We waited again about 4 months to get appoints for all of these evaluations at the Children's Hospital.  Had almost a Bible-thick of papers, results, letters and everything else, which I presented to the school for a second consideration.  They said no.  I felt I had reached an impass.  I felt a bit in despair and sad.  I did not know what to do now.  Talking with one of sister's in law, she recommended to speak with a friend of hers whose child had also speech problems.  So, I did.  It is here when I met my change agent

This mom gave me the courage, the hope, the inspiration that I needed to fight for my son.  She told me, "you need to fight the school system.  It is a long and hard journey, but you will make it.  Start calling, knocking at people's door, until you get what you want for your son.  Remember, you are the ONLY hope he has His education is now on your hands."  So, I did. I fought the school system, changed him to an Spanish Immersion school so that they would not give me the excuse that because he was biligual he was not speaking correctly.  I became an advocate of my son.  I called round meetings all the time with his teachers; and drove them crazy.  I became an expert of who he was/is, and now my son is getting the proper help at school in both languages.  If you meet him, you will never realize that he has a learning disability.  He is such a fine and inspirational boy.  He is loved by his teachers and friends, he is a leader in his class, and although reading and writing is still challenging for him, you would never realize that he really started talking age 6.5. He speaks English and Spanish. He is in the advanced academics program at school with an IEP because he is a twice exceptional child (2e child).  I am proud of him. Every breakthrough he makes, it a big achievement for all of us.

My change agent made me see an opportunity and the light to change the world of and for my child. It has been a hard journey because I faced my rocks on the way.  But, it was so much worth it. I am very involved in my child's education.  He still receives  private tutoring at home.  I wanted to make sure he is well supported at home and at school.  I did everything in my hands and keep on doing it to ensure he learns the tools and strategies to do just fine and have a successful future.

I hope this post inspires other moms to realize that you are your child's hope.  Their education is on your hands whether your child has a problem or not.  Become an expert of who your child is.

Furthermore, I wanted to let you know about the movie Moneyball, which will open in theaters September 23rd. It is based on a true story, starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Moneyball is the story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing radical strategies and statistics that flew in the face of conventional wisdom.

Six Steps to Smarter Studying

Shutterstock_64010920
After school studying is always challenging for children and parents.  It is hard for children because they are tired of a full day at school plus of any other extra curricular activities we may have signed up for.  For parents, it also quite a challenge when they are still small and depend on us to get their work done, when it is time for dinner and kitchen cleaning.

But to make our lives easier, it is alway a good strategy to talk to our children about little steps they can make to study in a smarter way so that when it is time to do homework, it is easiers for all the involved.

A good approach to teach these skills/steps to your child is be telling her/him that no one is born knowing how to study, and that she needs to learn a few study skills and then practice them.

Why work on your study skills? It will make it easier for them to learn and do well in class, especially as they move up to middle school and high school.

Shutterstock_73217560
Here are six steps to smarter studying:

  1. Pay attention in class.
  2. Take good notes.
  3. Plan ahead for tests and projects.
  4. Break it down. (If they have a bunch of stuff to learn, break it into smaller chunks.)
  5. Ask for help if they get stuck in class and at home.
  6. Get a good night's sleep!

Hopefully with these little steps, children can perform better at school and at homework time.

Happy back to school!

Proper Use and Selection of Your Child's Backpack

M47984_butterfly_3 One of the school accessories that get beat up the most during school season is our kid's backpack! So, if your child's backpack seems like it was used to sweep the school floors, it may be time to get a new one!

Before you get a new one though, read the following tips on how to proper use and select your kid's next backpack.  LL Bean and the American Occupational Therapy Association have put together answers to some frequently asked questions and at the same time, providing tips on proper use of book packs

Which Pack Is Right for My Child?

  • Select a pack that is appropriate to your child's age and size.
  • Select a pack with well padded shoulder straps.
  • Consider a pack with waist belt and padded back panels for extra comfort and stability.
  • Consider a pack with reflective trim for increased visibility.
  • Consider a pack with wheels for heavy loads or special needs.

CDs, gadgets, in-line skates, snacks, video games, laptops, and of course, books make up the daily load that children these days pack into their backpacks.  Are you surprised? Nope...it's a fact! Loading too much into a book pack or not wearing correctly can hurt your child's back, lead to other injuries , or just be uncomfortable.
